The author is a University of Louisville graduate and a self-taught multimedia artist, with a diverse background in education and journalism. I have been published on the collegiate level as a student in various publications and professionally as a journalist with a centennial Virginia weekly newspaper, the Bedford Bulletin. about the author

As a sports editor/humor columnist at the small-town weekly, I was able to harness the power of my pen to reach out from a land-locked community of five thousand to the international community as well. One of my exports found its way to the Middle East, in the form of a column entitled the “Strait of Hormuz fishing report”. It was well received by members of a United States Navy carrier group in the area. It was quite a testament to the loyalty of the Bedford Bulletin’s avid fan base and its appeal to new readership.

I would like to introduce myself as an observer whose close encounters within the world of primary and secondary education and small-town journalistic endeavors, have left quite an impact on my adult life experiences. I’ve become a “student of life” somewhere in the process and can honestly say, with a straight face, that I have learned far more than I’ve taught.

As an elementary school teacher in particular, I was able to experience the innocence and wonder of youthful creativity, as my students became my fountain of youth…teaching me a “new world” about life.

As a journalist and part of a small-town newsroom staff of three, I was able to enjoy the comradery of artisans like myself and share in the satisfaction of helping produce a quality finished product that the public had learned to expect from the famous centennial newspaper. It was very rewarding to be part of that endeavor. The owner of the Bedford Bulletin and my publisher, a spry young woman in her early nineties was a particular help to this young reporter. She took me under her wing and “toughened” me up. Together with my editor, a genuine poetic wordsmith and my comrade, a seasoned reporter and excellent photographer, I was truly blessed to have such award-winners (recipients of many Virginia Press Association awards) as my surrogate family and mentors.

I was born in Maryland, a former southern antebellum state, but I was raised in Virginia and I’ve found my true love in the South. While I have enjoyed a few adventures to the north and west of the Old Dominion, my soul remained in the South. My life experiences stem from my immersion in southern culture and I have followed it from Virginia, on a slow, southernly breeze, throughout the southern states. I currently reside in the Deep South. In a not-so-quiet community called Venice, Florida.
